Sports Massage and Complementary Treatments

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage is an ancient art treatment that is guaranteed to lift you out of the stresses of daily life and provide you with a real cure for those aching, tense neck and shoulder muscles.

Traditional Indian Head Massage practiced by women in India was restricted to head and hair. This has been extended to include the neck, shoulders and upper arms. Indian Head Massage is a safe, simple, yet effective therapy that not only promotes hair growth, but also provides relief from aches and pains. It is renowned for relieving symptoms of stress.

Its effect is both physical and emotional, calming the spirit, promoting relaxation and relieving stress.

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning "universal life energy". In Japanese it is represented by two kanji or pictograms; the first, Rei, may be translated as "universal, transcendental spirit, a boundless essence". The second Ki, translates as "life force energy". This life force energy can be defined as that energy which resides and acts in all created matter animal, vegetable or mineral.

Reiki is a healing energy in its truest sense. When the Reiki practitioner channels this life through their hands to the recipient, it activates the body's natural ability to heal itself. The energy goes to the deepest levels of the person's being, where illnesses have their origin. It works wherever the recipient needs it most, releasing blocked energies, cleansing the body of toxins and working to create a state of balance. It reinforces the recipient's ability to take responsibility for their life, and helps them to make the necessary changes in attitude and lifestyle to promote a happier and healthier life.

Body Massage

The treatment offered is beneficial for the skin, alleviates stress and stimulates the circulation. It also;

1) Improves your emotional and psychological well being.

2) Eases stress related anxiety and tension leaving the client in a state of calmness.

3) Induces a deep relaxation to all major muscle groups making them more supple and elastic, especially in the neck, shoulder and back regions.

4) Stimulates lymph drainage and blood circulation.

5) Helps detoxify the body and strengthen the immune system.

6) Allows the body’s healing mechanism to continue to work for many hours afterwards.

The use of cold pressed base oils with the addition of certain essential oils are easily absorbed, benefitting the skin immensely and leaving a healthy glow.

During the massage you may wish to stay silent and relax or ask questions and chat.

Feedback is very important to ensure that future treatments are adapted to suit you and gives you the opportunity to discuss this with your therapist.

How Often Should I Have a Massage?

This will depend on the individual and their personal health and / or fitness circumstances - or in some cases the nature of the injury. You will need to assess your own lifestyle and body condition and decide what is right for you. As a general rule a set of three treatments per month is recommended in times of stress or depression to try to rebalance body and spirit. Thereafter, a massage treatment once a month will usually keep most people flexible and pain free.

Naturally cost is a relevant factor. By choosing a half massage treatment such as neck, back and shoulders, often the stressed areas, you can save yourself money, feel on top of the world and be ready to face life’s problems with greater vigour and control. Please contact me and I will be happy to help you.

Effects of Sports Massage

Physical - The Structures of The Body

- Pumping - these are stroking movements made along the flow of lymphs and venous systems and aid in their circulations.

- Increased Tissue Permeability - deep massage causes the pores in tissue membranes to open, facilitating the exchange of fluids.

- Stretching - massage can stretch those tissues that cannot be reached by others means. During massage, the muscle bundles are stretched longitudinally and transversely.

- Breaking Down Scar Tissue - deep friction massage will help return normal tissue tension by breaking down scar tissue and adhesions.

- Improved Tissue Elasticity - when kneading the muscles, soft tissue can be pulled near to its maximum length and reclaim normal elasticity while under stress in certain positions.

- Opening Micro Circulations - when performing deep massage, this will cause a release of vasoactive substances creating a dilation of vessels which bring new fluid to the tissues.

Physiological - Systems That Run The Body

- Pain Reduction - massage stimulates the mechano-receptors, causing a release of endorphins which blot out pain sensations in the brain, reducing pain and muscle tension.

- Relaxation - relaxation of muscles can be achieved through warmth, circulation and stretching.

- Balancing Autonomous Nervous System - massage reduces muscle tension, pain and also the output from irritated mechano-receptors from muscles and tendons which causes sympathetic nervous over-activity. In some cases, massage will improve relaxation and sleep after strenuous exercise.

Psychological - The Mind

After a pre sport massage when the movements are quick and stimulating, the body will have a feeling of warmth and readiness to perform. Massage can also relieve anxiety before and after an event.
